Safety in
Grizzly and
Black Bear Country
Residents and visitors to
the Northwest Territories are very fortunate to be able to share the
land with an abundance of wildlife in one of the most undisturbed
natural settings in the country.
Bears, like all wildlife resources, are not only an important part of
our northern ecosystems, they are also an essential part of the cultural
and economic well-being of northern residents. For many people, seeing a
bear is a highlight of their wilderness experience. However, as long as
people and bears occupy the same land, there will be unplanned
encounters.
This booklet contains basic precautions and safety tips to keep in mind
while you are in bear country. Be aware that varying geographic
conditions may limit the actions you are able to take.
